Hi! Guys,
I am realy moved by Beethoven's string quartets, especially by those late ones.
I personally feel that these quartets present the deepest thoughts inside Beethoevn such as 9 symphonies present his will and power.
So far, those records I have are complete set by Quarteto Italiano & Quatuor Hongrois(EMI Mono), mid & late works by Guarneri String Quartet
,and several peices by Budapest Quartet. I am really impresived by the beauty and vividness of the play of Quarteto Italiano.
The dynamic and tempo of the play of Quatuor Homgrois is fantasic. I truly like this set of record and am quite looking forward to listen their DG record
How much difference they will be after more then ten year and changing two members?
For the record by Guarneri String Quartet, I was not too touched by it >_<.
For Budapest Quartet,...... I need to listen more of thier recordings. I feel that the "Grande Fuga" they played is dramatic
For those I have not listened..... I am extremely interested to know the record by Vegh Quartet.
As I know, they recorded these works twice, one in Music and Arts, and the other in Valois.
Most of comments I saw are about the later one (Valois recording).
Some Americans think that the play of Vegh is excellent but the recording and CD quality of this one is poor.
What do you think of this set? Have any one listened the Music and Arts one? How's these two compare with each other and with other records?
What make me really curious is that Vegh used to be the second Violin of Quatuor Hongrois (actually, he was the first violin as the Quatuor Hongrois was formed).
After Vegh left at late 40's, These two quartets recorded their "first" set of cmplete Beethoven about the same time..... were they competing with each other?
Also, can you please talk about other records if you like or have been touched.
Thanks and have a great weekend
